Provincial Nomination Programs (PNP’s)

Canada has a population of about 34 million people and it is the second largest country on earth with a total land area of 10 million square kilometres. It has 5 distinct regions which covers its ten (10) provinces and three (3) territories, each one of them having its own capital city. While the majority of its population lives in cities, we can find quite a lot of its population living in small towns, rural areas and everywhere in between.

Each of Canada’s thirteen provinces and territories operates its own PNP program with several streams totalling more than 80 different provincial nominee programs!

Since the launch of the Express Entry system in 2015, many Canadian provinces and territories have come up with their specific PNP streams aligned to the Express Entry in order to meet their economic and demographic needs, while some of the provinces continue to offer a direct pathway to immigration as well, which is not linked with Express Entry.

An Express Entry applicant whose Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS) is falling short of the required cut offs can look to increase their CRS score with an additional 600 points, if he/she successfully manages to get a PNP nomination from one of the provincial nominee programs, which will virtually guarantee them an Invitation to apply (ITA) in the next Express Entry draw.

PNP programs of Canada are becoming very popular amongst prospective immigrants as it is seen that every year the Canadian federal government is increasing the quota for the PNP candidates and the PNP programs are now considered the fastest growing route to economic immigration in Canada.

PNP Requirements and Eligibility

The idea usually is, to attract workers who can readily contribute to the economy and who have a high possibility of remaining in that province, owing to their prior connection to the province.

Although, it is advisable to refer to each province’s specific requirements and eligibility factors to find out the chances of success however, in general, a high score in language tests, superior level of education and skilled experience in an in-demand occupation gives an applicant a clear advantage to succeed.

Owing to the high level of interest shown by the Express Entry applicants in various PNP programs, especially of bigger provinces, many of the provinces face backlogs of applications, forcing them to open and close their popular streams periodically throughout the year.
