FAMILY SPONSORSHIP IMMIGRATION

One of the priorities of Canadian government is to keep the families of its citizens and permanent residents together and unified and to do that Canada offers a Family Sponsorship stream, making it easy for its citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their spouse or common-law partners, dependent children and parents or grandparents to Canada.

Sponsoring your Spouse or Common-Law Partner

Canadian citizens or permanent residents, who are 18 years or older, can sponsor their spouse or common-law partners, whether they are living in Canada on a valid temporary visa or living abroad, for permanent residency to Canada. If the sponsored applicants are living in Canada at the time of application, they may be eligible for an open work permit. A spousal open work permit gives an opportunity to the individual to work for any employer in Canada and share the financial burden with their partner, while they sponsorship application is underway.

As Canada recognizes common-law partnerships, its gives an opportunity to a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to sponsor their live in partners of more than one year, even if they are not married.

Some of the requirements to be eligible to sponsor your Spouse or Common-Law Partner

  • You must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident and at least 18 years of age;
  • You must be living in Canada at the time of sponsorship or planning to return to Canada once your spouse or common-law partner becomes a permanent resident of Canada;
  • You are able to provide financial support for a spouse or common-law partner for atleast three years from the date they become permanent residents

Sponsoring your Dependant Child

Although while processing your own immigration application, the government of Canada gives you an option to include your accompanying dependent children in your application for permanent residency however, in case you were unable to do so for any reason, you can still sponsor an eligible child for a permanent residency for Canada under the Canada’s Child Sponsorship program. Canadian citizens or permanent residents are allowed to sponsor their biological or adopted children under the age of 22 for a permanent residence to Canada, as long as they themselves do not have any dependents of their own.

It is to be noted that as an exception, a child over the age of 22 may still be considered as a dependent if they suffer any physical or mental condition owing to which they are unable to take care of themselves on their own.

Some of the requirements to be eligible to sponsor your Dependent Child

  • You must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident living in Canada and at least 18 years off age;
  • Not be in prison, charged with any serious offence, or bankrupt
  • You must be able to provide financial support for a dependent child for 10 years, or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first.

PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS SPONSORSHIP

If you are a citizen or a permanent resident of Canada for more than three years, you may be eligible to sponsor your parents or grandparents for a permanent residency to Canada. You must be capable to financially support your parent or grandparent and take care of their basic needs like food and housing. You must also ensure that your parents or grandparents do not claim any social assistance from the Canadian government and you may be required to sign an undertaking that confirms your agreement to repay any assistance or benefits paid to the sponsored person for a period of twenty years.


Some of the requirements to be eligible to sponsor your Parents or Grandparents

  • You must be a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident for at least three years;
  • You must meet the minimum necessary income (MNI) requirements as per the size of your family unit for at least three consecutive years prior to the application;
  • You must commit to support your sponsored dependents financially for a period of upto twenty years.
